The New Bedford Festival Theatre is pleased to announce its exciting Summer Academy Program. Many area high school students have taken part in this program over the twenty years it has been offered. Many have chosen to pursue Theatre Studies at the university and college level. Students from New Bedford, Fall River, Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Westport, Somerset, Swansea, Mattapoisett, and Marion have taken part and each participant has gained a working knowledge of the varied aspects of Theatre with his or her Apprentice experience. The program will run from Monday, July 4, 2016 through Monday, August 1, 2016.

Students who wish an application form should call Festival Theatre at (508) 991-5212. The form asks each applicant to choose the major areas of interest in which they feel they might like to be involved. Stage Crew, Set Construction, Properties, Costumes, Lighting, Sound, Stage Management, Promotion, and work in the Production Office are some of the exciting offerings. Applicants pick the areas of Theatre production that best suit them. New Bedford Festival Theatre is a place where students learn from professionals in a hands-on environment, as well as working with New York actors, some with Broadway credits. This season’s offering will be the 50’s Rock N’ Roll Musical GREASE, to be presented for 7 performances July 22 – July 31, 2016 at the historic Zeiterion Performing Arts Center in downtown New Bedford.

As participants, students will work with Artistic Director George Charbonneau, nationally known Director/Choreographer, Michael Susko, well-known Musical Director, Juan Rodriguez, highly regarded Stage Manager, Maura Neff, Master Theatre Technician, Megan Parrish and our Summer Academy Coordinator, Sarah G. Cadieux.

All participants are awarded a stipend at the end of their work on each production based on the amount of time spent in the program and the duties performed High School Students who wish to enhance their interest in Theatre should call Festival Theatre at (508) 991-5212. ELIGIBILITY:

  • Minimum Age: 14 years of age by July 1, 2016
  • Must be entering grade 9 or higher in 2016-2017 Academic year
  • Must be a good student, able to take directions & not be distracted

APPLICATION:

  • Application & Teacher Recommendation Form available on line at www.nbfestivaltheatre.com or from your Theatre Instructor/Director
  • Must be completed and submitted by May 13, 2016
  • All applicants will be scheduled for interview

COMMITMENTS:

  • Hours vary daily depending on production schedule – Generally 7 to 12 hours per day.
  • Students work side-by-side with theatre professionals and be willing to listen carefully and follow directions without distraction.
  • Transportation and meals are not provided by Festival Theatre.
  • Participants must have ready contact with the Summer Academy Coordinator.

EXPECTATIONS:

  • Participants are expected to attend all workshops, hands-on sessions, and learning experiences.
  • Workshop hours are based on needs of the Technical Crew and Production Staff and generally Run 8 hours daily.
  • Time is used for load-in, construction, preparation, and all production work of the presentation.
  • Hours increase during “Tech Week” depending on rehearsal progress.
  • Evening hours are required as scheduled.
  • A basic schedule is distributed at the start of the program.
  • Exception participants will be selected to be part of the actual running crew of the production.
  • Participants completing all requirements receive an education monetary stipend at the close of the program.

Participants of the Summer Academy have learned…

  • Costuming skills including hand sewing, steaming, repair
  • Loading-in and setting up professionally designed settings
  • Carpentry with all tools and safety guidelines
  • Lighting from design, equipment care, color usage, and spots
  • Staging from stage use and care to rigging and special effects
  • Stage design including painting and perspective
  • Marketing, fundraising, networking with the public
  • Make-up design, techniques, application
  • Wig and Hair design
  • Sound Design and mechanics along with mic preparation
  • House Management and care of the theatre environment
  • Properties creation, use and movement on and off stage
