To celebrate its 25th Season of bringing the best of Broadway to Southern New England, Festival Theatre will present Rodgers and Hammerstein’s beloved musical THE SOUND OF MUSIC – “the happiest sound in all the world” – July 25–August 3, 2014 for 7 performances at the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center, New Bedford, MA.
An audience favorite, THE SOUND OF MUSIC returns to Festival Theatre due to overwhelming audience demand. The 1999 Festival Theatre production was universally hailed as one of the finest productions of this classic musical theatre creation.
Using a full orchestra (with the mighty Zeiterion organ), full cast, professional settings and costumes, THE SOUND OF MUSIC will again dazzle the audience with its glorious musical score and touching story.
Festival Theatre hopes that many local, talented singers/performers will support this effort by auditioning for the many roles available – including the seven Von Trapp children and a large nuns’ chorus – to work side-by-side with the theatre professionals selected from auditions in Boston and New York. Local auditions will be announced shortly.
ABOUT THE SHOW
The final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein was destined to become the world’s most beloved musical. When a postulant proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry. Upon returning from their honeymoon they discover that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain’s immediate service in their navy. The family’s narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theatre. The motion picture version remains the most popular movie musical of all time.
Tickets for THE SOUND OF MUSIC will go on sale November 5, 2013 – in time for Holiday gift-giving.
